Articles by Busy Mom Designs

My name is Tricia. I am 30 years old and live in Ontario, Canada. I am a busy Mom to 4 little ones.

I have always been “crafty” and remember the excitement of receiving counted cross-stitch kits in my stocking as a little girl. I learned to crochet very young, but really got into it when my husband and I were first married and working a job that required a lot of travel (driving) all over Canada. I spent hours and hours hooking away while my husband drove or while we spent time in hotels. I made crocheted Christmas gifts for everyone I knew that year!

After we settled down and started having children, I set my hooks aside for a while and started sewing. I made cloth diapers and clothing for my boys and soon started an online shop selling all kinds of things diaper and baby related. After my 3rd son was born (in 3.5 years), I took a break from crafting and started homeschooling my children as we traveled and spent 2 years living in Mexico doing humanitarian aid work with my husband’s organization.

We moved back to Canada and settled in Hamilton, Ontario when I was 6 months pregnant with my 4th baby – a girl! Soon after she was born, I realized there were so many beautiful things I could make for her so I dug out my crochet hooks, set off to the yarn store and haven’t stopped crocheting since!

I spend most of my free time crocheting. Crocheting relaxes me after a busy day. I often crochet late into the night and still hate to put it down to go to sleep. I am designing in my head when I’m going about my daily tasks and even dream of new designs from time to time! I have so many ideas, but so little time. I am trying to add more designs for you as often as I can, but can only work in the little free time I have at the end of the day.

I try to write all of my patterns with the beginner crocheter in mind. Patterns are written with easy to understand terminology and challenging sections are explained clearly, often with the help of photos.

This blog is a new venture – a place where I can branch out and expand! I hope to soon have many tutorials, free patterns, book / magazine / pattern reviews, web shop reviews and much more! Please have patience with me as I learn the ropes of blogging.

Thanks for stopping by!

Yours in yarn,
Tricia

I am so blessed!  Having spent some time living among the less fortunate, I am always asking myself what I can do to help.  What can I give back?  So Mondays have become “Mercy-Full Monday” on the Busy Mom Designs Facebook page.  I try to find and post new people / organizations that are working to help others and ask that followers of my page do the same.  I especially love hearing what other crocheters/knitters are doing with their talents to help others!

This week I wanted to do more.  So here it is: I am challenging YOU – anyone who can crochet (or knit) to commit with me to making one hat this week to donate to a charitable organization or hospital/NICU, etc. of your choice.  After you have made your hat, take a photo and post it on our Facebook page (if you’re not on Facebook, you can email it to me: BusyMomDesigns@gmail.com) and let me know what organization you are sending your hat to.  Let me know when the hat has shipped and, in return, I will send you a free Busy Mom Designs pattern of your choice!

The Crochet-it-Forward challenge will run all week, ending on Monday, September 26th, 2011.  Feel free to make more than one hat to send, however, the free pattern giveaway is limited to one pattern per person.

To sign up for this challenge, tag yourself in the sign-up photo on Facebook or comment on this post to let me know you are participating.

Please take some time to consider this challenge and what it might mean to the family of a sick preemie/newborn, a chemo patient, a homeless person or a child without warm clothes in a cold climate.  A simple hat can take as little as 15 minutes to create, but can make such a difference to someone in need!  And whether or not you are able to participate this week, please take a moment to pass this on.  I would love to see a lot of people participate!!  By the way, feel free to use our free pumpkin hat pattern for this!

I am currently collecting info on organizations that will accept hat donations.  If you know of any, please comment here with info or a link so I can add them to my list.  I will be making a blog post soon with info on these organizations.

Thanks for participating and I look forward to seeing all of your beautiful creations!!

I have been a terrible blogger lately!  We had such a busy summer and have been spending time getting re-settled, re-organized and adjusting to the back-to-school routine since arriving home from Mexico.  But I hope to get back to blogging again now that life is becoming a little more predictable.

So today I am starting anew with a free crochet pattern!

The story behind this pattern:
My sister works in an NICU and made a request this summer for a crochet pattern for a preemie / newborn pumpkin hat as she and some of her co-workers were hoping to make some for all of the infants in their nursery for Halloween.   She wasn’t aware that I was already writing a pattern for a Jack-o’-Lantern / Pumpkin beanie for my shop!  I was happy to change it up a bit and add some teeny tiny sizes to the pattern and decided to post it here so that (hopefully!) many other generous souls will use it to bless the families of tiny little fighters in hospitals everywhere.

This pattern has been altered somewhat from my original pattern and does not include the Jack-o’-Lantern features or larger sizes.  If you wish to purchase the full pattern (with sizes from 0 mos right up to adults), you may do so HERE.

If you get a chance to try this pattern, please leave a comment with your feedback!  And I am always open to pattern suggestions for future blogs as well.  And, as always, if you’re able to get photos of your project in use (or not in use), I would love to see them!  Share them with me via email: BusyMomDesigns@gmail.com or on the Busy Mom Designs Facebook page.

©COPYRIGHT INFO:
Feel free to use this pattern for your own personal and charity use.
As always, you may sell items made from this pattern, but you must state that you used a free pattern from Busy Mom Designs and include a link to this original blog post.
Feel free to link this pattern to your blog or elsewhere, but pattern and photos may not be copied in any way without direct written permission from myself.

Thanks for stopping by and enjoy the pattern!

Preemie / Newborn Baby Pumpkin Hat

Crochet Pumpkin Hat Pattern – Preemie to Newborn

 Designed by Tricia Roberts
Busy Mom Designs

Materials Required:

  • 5mm (H/8) crochet hook for stem (preemie) and vine (all sizes)
  • 5.5mm (I/9) crochet hook for preemie hat and stem of newborn hat
  • 6mm (J/10) crochet hook for newborn hat
  • Up to 50g worsted weight yarn – orange
  • Small amount of worsted weight yarn – brown (for stem)
  • Small amount of light or worsted weight yarn – green (for vine)
  • Stitch marker
  • Yarn needle

Skill Level:

 Advanced beginner

Stitch Gauge:

With 5.5mm (I/9) crochet hook and working in the following stitch pattern: *hdc, hdc, fphdc*:
6 hdc = 2"
3 hdc rounds = 1"

Terms:

ch: chain
sc: single crochet
dc: double crochet
sl st: slip stitch
st: stitch
sts: stitches
FO: fasten off
*_*: stitches between asterisks are to be repeated

Sizes:

Preemie 1 - 8-10" head circumference
Preemie 2 - 10-12" head circumference
Newborn – 12-14" head circumference

Notes:

  • If pattern says “hdc 2″, hdc one time in the next 2 stitches. If pattern says “2hdc”, complete 2 hdc stitches in one stitch.

  • To avoid an obvious seam, each hdc round begins with “ch 1, hdc in same st“. This completes your first st and counts as just one st in your final stitch count.

  • If pattern says to hdc in “first” or “same” st, stitch in the same st as the beginning ch 1. If pattern says to hdc in “next” st or following, stitch in the following stitch.

  • Instructions for scalloped or standard edging included.

  • Instructions for all preemie sizes are included. For the newborn size, you will be completing the pattern by the “preemie 2″ instructions, but using a larger hook.

Special Stitches:

Front Post Half-Double Crochet (fphdc): Begin this stitch by yarning over. Insert your hook (front to back) below the top of the stitch (in between the posts of the stitch you will be working in and the previous stitch) then back again (back to front) between the posts of the current stitch and following stitch. You should now have one loop on your hook as well as the “post” of the current stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop, (the post will no longer be on your hook). Yarn over and pull through all remaining loops on hook. (1 fphdc completed)

Working in BLO (back loop only): When crocheting a stitch, you usually insert your hook into 2 loops of a stitch on the previous row/round. When workin in BLO, instead of inserting your hook into 2 loops, you will be skipping over the front loop (the loop nearest to you) and inserting the hook only under the back loop.

Hat Instructions (all sizes):

Section #1 – Stem:
Begin with brown yarn and 5mm (H/8) crochet hook for preemie sizes or 5.5mm (I/9) hook for newborn size.

*~* For a magic circle photo tutorial, see my blog post HERE. *~*

Round 1Begin with magic circle, sc 5 in circle. Tighten circle center. Join with a sl st to first sc.

Round 2Ch 1, sc in BLO of same st, *sc* in BLO of following 4 sts, join with sl st to first sc. (5)

Rounds 3-5Ch 1, sc in same st (both loops), sc in following 4 sts (both loops), join with sl st to first sc. (5)

Round 6Ch 1, 2sc in same st, sc in following 4 sts, join with sl st to first sc. (6)

Round 7Ch 1,*2sc* in same st and each following st around, join with sl st to first sc. (12)

Round 8Ch 1, sc in same st, 2sc in next st, *sc, 2sc* around, join with sl st to first sc. (18)

Round 9Join orange yarn in first st. Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next st, 2sc in next st, *sc 2, 2sc* around, join with sl st to first sc. (24)

For preemie 1 hat, stop here and skip to section #2. For other sizes, continue on.

Round 10Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next 2 sts, 2sc in next st, *sc 2, 2sc* around, join with sl st to first sc. (30)

For preemie 2 or newborn hat, continue on to section #2.

Section #2 – Pumpkin Body:

Continue on with orange yarn, but switch to 5.5mm (I/9) crochet hook for preemie sizes or 6mm (J/10) crochet hook for newborn size.

Round 1: (All sizes): NOTE: Be sure you have switched to correct hook size!

Ch 1, hdc in same st (counts as 1 st), *hdc* in each st around, join with sl st to ch 1.

(Preemie 1: 24) (Preemie 2 / Newborn: 30)

Round 2: (All sizes): Ch 1, hdc in first hdc of previous round (counts as 1 st), hdc in next st, fphdc in next st, *hdc in next 2 sts, fphdc in next st* around, join with sl st to ch 1. (Stitch count will be the same as for previous round)

For preemie 1 hat: Repeat round 2 for 6 more rounds.

For preemie 2 hat: Repeat round 2 for 7 more rounds.

Section #3 – Finishing:
Continue on with orange yarn and 5.5mm (I/9) crochet hook.

For standard edging: Ch 1, hdc in first hdc of previous round (counts as 1 st), *hdc* in each st around, join with sl st to ch 1.

(Stitch counts will be the same as for Round 1 of Section #2.)

For scalloped edging: Do NOT ch 1, *Sk next st, 3dc in next st, sl st in next st* repeat around.

(Stitch counts will be the same as for Round 1 of Section #2.)

FO and weave in ends.

Vine:

Using green light worsted or worsted weight yarn and 5mm (H/8) crochet hook:

Ch 16, *3sc* in 2nd ch from hook and each following ch.

FO leaving a lengthy tail for attaching vine to hat.

Stitch vine to top of hat as per photos or your personal preference.

Weave in any loose ends.

I can’t count the number of times I have been asked how to attach a hair clip (alligator style or similar) to a crocheted flower. There are many ways to do it and no method is more “right” or “wrong” than another, but thought I would share how I do it so you visual types can see. :)  Warning: This tutorial is heavy on the photos!  But it just makes it easier than trying to put it all into words.  ;)

For this tutorial you will need the following:

1 completed flower (or other) appliqué ~ any style. (This looks best if the flower is longer than the hair clip you will be using so the clip is completely hidden underneath.) For this tutorial I will be using the 3 Layer Flower Appliqué (pattern available HERE).

1 alligator (or similar) hair clip. These can be purchased many places including most dollar stores, but if you’re looking for bulk supplies, check out Etsy suppliers. (The clip used for this tutorial was purchased HERE.)

A yarn or tapestry needle.

(Please excuse the poor quality of these pics.  I was dealing with a crappy camera, bad lighting and the WRONG color of yarn, lol!)

If you didn’t leave a lengthy tail on your appliqué, you will need to cut a piece of yarn several inches long and securely attach it to the back of your appliqué before beginning.

1. Thread your yarn tail onto your needle.  (My yarn tail is not very long – a lengthier tail would be easier to work with!)

2. Center your clip on the back of your appliqué.

3. Bring your needle through a couple of stitches near the upper left-hand side of your clip.

4. Wrap your yarn over the top of the clip (through the middle of the 2 “pinchers”).

5. Bring your needle through 1 or 2 stitches on the upper right-hand side of your clip.

6. Pull it through snuggly.

Close-up.

7. Open the clip and bring the yarn through the inside of the clip at the very top, then close the clip on the yarn.

8. Bring your needle through a couple of stitches near the upper left-hand side of your clip again.

9. Wrap your yarn over the top of the clip agin (through the middle of the 2 “pinchers”).

10. Bring your needle through 1 or 2 stitches on the upper right-hand side of your clip again and through 1 or 2 stitches further down on the right hand side of the clip as well.  I know, I could have included an extra photo here, but you get the point.  ;)

11. Open the clip and bring the yarn through the inside of the clip near the bottom edge, then close the clip on the yarn.

12. Insert your needle through several stitches on the left-hand side of the clip to secure.  Pull tightly.

13. Skip over a couple of stitches and insert your needle through a few more stitches to secure.

14. Pull through.  Fasten off.

15. Trim your tail.  You’re finished!

One sweet little flower clip – ready to be attached to a flower, headband or a cute little girl!

When attached this way, the clip is very secure.  Even with a lot of toddler tugging, your appliqué should remain firmly attached to your clip.

If you found this tutorial useful, leave a comment!  I would love your suggestions for future tutorials as well!

(For the record, I have nothing against hot glue.  I know many people simply hot glue their clippies to their appliqués.  I just prefer to avoid the extra time of heating the gun and the messiness and impending burns (I’m not such an expert with the hot guns ;) ) and find this method to be quicker and easier!)

We have landed in Mexico and are loving it here!  So much sun, so little time.  My kids are having lots of fun outside and I am enjoying the relaxed pace.

But I am also working on more patterns (of course!) and have listed a couple today!

The first is one you might be familiar with already.  The Elegant Rose is just the flower portion of the Elegance Headband pattern.  If you already have “Elegance”, this is not for you, but if you’re looking for an easy flower appliqué for your next problem – this pattern is quick and easy to work up!

Click the photo below to purchase “The Elegant Rose” pattern directly (instant download after purchase!):

OR click HERE to purchase on Etsy.

And the second pattern is another baby pod photo prop pattern.  This is one of my favorites – so soft and snuggly, yet quick and easy to work up!  I used Patons Divine for this soft, fuzzy, mohair version, but any of your favorite bulky (#5) yarns may be used.  It’s another quick pattern to make!  If you sell crocheted items, this one is sure to be a hit!  If you’re a photographer, you can do so much with this one!  Babies love how soft it is and photographers love that you can still see all those sweet little fingers and toes!

Click the photo below to purchase the “Cuddly Baby Cozy” pattern directly (instant download after purchase!):

OR click HERE to purchase on Etsy.

I have several more patterns in the works including a couple I haven’t mentioned or posted pics of yet!  Can’t wait to share them with all of you!

Hasta luego!

Last night Busy Mom Designs reached 5000 sales on Etsy!!  Being just one year old, this is huge for me!  When I started selling crochet patterns I had hoped for 500 sales in my first year.  However, I hadn’t counted on having such AMAZING customers who would faithfully return time and again to purchase patterns from this pattern newbie!

THANK-YOU to ALL of you – it really has been an incredible year!!

To celebrate I offered a great 50% off coupon code for today only.  This is one of those times it pays to be a Facebook fan as the code was only listed there.  However, we still managed to sell over 100 patterns today!

Thanks to all of my customers and the many friend I have made among you!!  Can’t wait to list some more patterns for you all!

Well, it FINALLY feels like spring here and I am LOVING it!!  On a whim I joined a co-ed soccer team and have been playing once a week.  This is the first real physical activity I have done in YEARS and I am feeling it!!  But it feels great to be outside doing something healthy and fun!

This past week my husband and I made a huge decision to move back to Mexico to temporarily fill a position for the charity he works for.  We will be leaving June 19th (soooo soon!) and will be staying until September at the earliest.  We really don’t know for sure how much longer it will be.  It all depends on when they find the right candidate for the position.  So there is a lot of excitement going on here and I have had less crochet and pattern writing time this week as we work through the logistics of the move and start preparing for the trip.

But there are several patterns I really hope to have listed in my Etsy shop before we go.  Here are some previews of what is in the works:

Hopefully I can find some quiet time to work on these patterns over the weekend!  Now that I have posted previews I should be extra motivated to get to work on them!

Wishing you all a beautiful weekend!

Thank-you to ALL who participated in our giveaway!!  Thank-you to all of the wonderful shops who so generously donated prizes and to all who entered.  Please continue to support these great shops!

All prize winners have been posted and emailed.  Prize winners please respond within 48 hours of being notified or your prize will be forfeited and a new winner chosen.  If you are a prize winner and did not receive an email, please send me a message as soon as possible!   (tricia@BusyMomDesigns.com)

WINNER: Comment #3 – Crystal Hooper

Congratulations!

If you love to sew, this is a great shop for you!  Precious Patterns is a sewing pattern shop on Etsy with so many great patterns – from shoes to bibs to accessories to clothing to toys – there is something for everyone!

Designers’ Bio: Precious Patterns is run by a creative mother/daughter team. We are currently working from different states to create new and unique patterns for you!  Mary Ayres has designed all of our patterns. She is a nationally known craft designer and has sold thousands of her original designs to numerous national craft, sewing, and quilting magazines.  Sara Ayres emails the patterns and takes care of all the financial details.  She is also an ultra sound technician at a cancer research hospital.

Giveaway Prize: ONE winner will receive any one sewing pattern of their choice from Precious Patterns.

This is an example of a pattern from Precious Patterns’ Etsy Shop:

The e-sewing pattern for the Ballerina and Dorothy Bibs is available at www.preciouspatterns.etsy.com for $3.99.  The bibs are very easy to make! They look like little dresses with legs underneath.  As the designer, you can create little bib dresses, using fabrics of your choice. This is a great way to use leftover fabric scraps.  A pattern for Super Baby and Little Man Bibs for boys is also available.

WINNERS:

Congratulations!

My theory has always been that you can never have too many hats.  ;)  So when another great Etsy boutique owner offered to donate some crocheted hats to our giveaway I was all over it!  Lizzziee Crochet is an Etsy boutique with plenty of hats to offer.  Cute designs for girls and boys!

Owner Lizzie writes:

I am a stay at home Mom living in Northern California where “hat weather” can come in the middle of winter or the middle of summer. I started out crocheting little hats, flower hair clips and headbands for my daughter. After them as gifts to my friends’ kids, I decided to share them with others Moms who don’t have time to make them.

Giveaway Prize: TWO winners will receive one hat of their choice from Lizzziee Crochet

To Enter:

Visit Lizzziee Crochet on Etsy and  Facebook.  Return to this post and leave a comment in the comment box below stating which hat style is your favorite.
